On Graduation

June 3, 2026La’Verra
A note before you read. The transmissions you receive here twice a month are ARMONEEY’s. This is different. “From La’Verra” are unscheduled. They drop when something is worth saying: perspective from the person building this, how I see, what I won’t leave unsaid. Same profile, different register.

Graduation is designed to feel like an arrival. The ceremony, the cap and gown, the photographs, the congratulations. All of it is structured to produce the feeling that something significant was completed and something earned was being recognized. And I sat in that room unable to access that feeling genuinely, because I could see too clearly what I was actually being celebrated for.

Thirteen years of showing up. Of sitting inside a structure I didn’t design, learning what someone else decided was worth knowing, in the sequence someone else decided it should be encountered, evaluated by metrics someone else decided were the right ones.

The diploma was confirmation that I had successfully complied. And compliance was never something I wanted recognition for.

The people around me were genuinely moved. I understood why. For many of them it represented real sacrifice, their family’s sacrifice, their own endurance through genuinely difficult circumstances, a door opening that wasn’t guaranteed to open. That meaning was real for them and I wasn’t dismissive of it.

But I kept asking myself what I had actually produced in thirteen years that was mine. What had I built. What thinking had I developed that came from genuine intellectual engagement rather than from performing the expected responses to predetermined questions. What internal architecture had been deliberately constructed rather than accidentally assembled from whatever the environment deposited.

The honest answer was very little, because the structure wasn’t designed to develop what I actually was. It was designed to certify that I had processed the standard curriculum at the standard pace and produced the standard outputs. I had. That’s what the diploma said. And it meant almost nothing to me, because the standard was never the standard I was holding myself to internally.

What I wanted recognition for didn’t have a ceremony.

There was no graduation for the years of reading outside the curriculum. No ceremony for the thinking happening privately that the school had no framework to evaluate. No diploma for the internal architecture being built without anyone’s guidance or acknowledgment. Those things were real. Those things mattered. The ceremony wasn’t for those things.

I smiled in the photographs because the people who love me were happy and their happiness was real and worth honoring. But I remember sitting there thinking that the first day I closed a sale, the first month ARMONEEY crossed a real revenue threshold, the first time the work had an address of its own, those days would feel like what graduation was supposed to feel like and didn’t.
